Sources

Where we get information

We work with documents in Ukrainian, Russian, Polish, Latin, English, German, Bulgarian and Rusyn languages. The main sources of the research are:

Books of registration of acts of civil status

Books of registration of acts of civil status

Registers of births, marriages, divorces, and deaths in the Soviet period. Books up to 1945 are stored in the regional archives, after – in district civil registry offices (to obtain information from there, confirmation of family ties is mandatory).

Metrical books

Metrical books

The main sources of finding ancestors from the second half of the 18th century until the revolution of 1918. They consist of 3 chapters: births, marriages, deaths (in Hebrew books there is another chapter on divorces). Metrics were filled out by authorized representatives of the clergy and, depending on confession, kept in churches, churches, synagogues, etc.

Revision lists

Revision lists

Official population censuses that were conducted in the period from 1720 to 1858. They contain information about family composition, social status, age, sometimes profession, place of resettlement, years of military service and other details. This group of genealogical sources also includes the General Description of Left-Bank Ukraine of 1765-69 (partly covered the territories of modern Poltava, Chernihiv, Kyiv, and Cherkasy regions) and the census of the Sloboda regiments of 1732.

Confessional lists

Confessional lists

A list of parishioners of the Orthodox or Catholic Church who came to annual confession (usually during Great Lent). There you can find data on the composition of the family, age and social status. Preserved approximately from the middle of the 18th century.

Cadasters

Cadasters

Documents that were conducted in Rus from the 15th to the 17th centuries as a description of land holdings and real estate of service people. In the process of changing the tax system in the middle of the 17th century, census books were added to them - yard descriptions, which didn’t contain information about the land, but indicated the entire male population of the yard. In some census books of the beginning of the 18th century there are also data on the female population.

Household books

Household books

A census of all family members and their household, introduced in villages in Soviet times, starting from 1935. Pre-war documents have almost never been preserved anywhere, others are stored not in archives, but in village administrations.

In addition, we work with lists of Jewish families, “marriage searches”, recruitment lists, funds of provincial governorates, city magistrates, district and provincial courts, foreign settlers, etc.
